A Trip Back In Time: Metchnikoff’s Contribution To Modern Immune System Studies

image026We often mention current research that is being performed in the Autism / Aspergers world. From exploring gluten to taking a look at HBOT, there are countless studies being performed. I always find it interesting to take a look back at the original minds behind the studies. The men and women who started questioning different aspects of the disorder long before DAN! conferences and World Autism Days where we recognize Autism.

One such man is Elie Metchnikoff , a Russian microbiologist. Elie died in 1916, but not before contributing a great deal to the study of Autism. Metchnikoff became known as the “Father of Modern GI”, and though his work was done almost a century ago, they relate to modern day studies and research of GI disorders.

One study that Metchnikoff is known for is his investigation into Scavenger Cells. When it comes to cellular defense (or, our body’s ability to attack infection), it is usually the case that infectious agents are repelled by chemicals in the body. However, if this does not happen, the foreign agents will come in contact with cells whose goal is to eliminate them before they cause more damage. Scavenger cells, as their name implies, are cells that find and attack infectious agents directly. Other cells, such as natural killer cells attack cells of the body that harbor these infectious cells.

Metchnikoff became very interested in cellular research, especially Microbes. He drew the connection between the digestion of starfish and larvae was essentially the same as the process carried out by the white blood cells. He believed that some white blood cells had the ability to destroy bacteria, although Louis Pasteur was very skeptical of Metchnikoff’s claims. During this time, the majority of researches believed that white blood cells absorbed infection and bacteria and carried it  throughout the body.

Another interesting study that Metchnikoff did was on aging. He claimed that aging was due to toxic bacteria in the gut. He also believed that lactic acid could lengthen life, so he drank sour milk every single day. He wrote a three books including Immunity in Infectious Diseases, The Nature of Man, and The Prolongation of Life: Optimistic Studies. The Prolongation of Life inspired other researchers to look into the possibilities of good bacteria that could help the immune system and promote good intestinal health. These studies are where Probiotics were based on.

In 1908, only 10 years before he passed away, Metchinkoff received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on immunity, especially cellular immunity and the Phagocytosis process.

So what’s all of this mean, and why should we talk about it?

Metchnikoff has been gone for quite some time, but Probiotics? We hear about them very often. Next week, we’ll take a look at Probiotics and the effect that they have on Autism.

If nothing else, let this serve as a reminder that even though some research cases or studies you read may seem outrageous, keep in mind that the great Louis Pasteur doubted Metchnikoff, but he kept on going in the direction that he believed in, and we got some great benefits from his persistence.

The Importance of Mucosal Immunity: More Than Just Protection From Infection

When it comes to Autism, there are a lot of big words floating around. From Mercury to Mucosal Immunity and Hemoglobin levels to Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments (HBOT), things can get pretty overwhelming. We’ve covered the dangers of Mercury, and the vast improvements and advancements that the HBOT treatment has received. We haven’t yet discussed Mucosal Immunity and its importance, and in it’s own right, it serves a huge role in the prevention of infection.

Mucosal Immune System: The Need To Know Basics:

The Mucosal Immune System, much like it sounds (notice the closeness to “Mucous”), is one of the parts of the overall human immune system. The responsibility of the Mucosal Immune System, is to prevent  various infectious microbes from entering the mucous membranes. It basically protects the mucous membrane from infection. Additionally, it protects the body or balances it when microorganisms and other foreign materials enter the body.

Since a healthy mucosal immune system aids in the prevention of infection, it’s relatively obvious the reasons for its necessity, especially in the Autistic body that is typically more susceptible to infection.

How The Mucosal Immune System Works: In Easy-To-Understand Terms:

The beginning of the healthy, infection-free body starts in the immune system. The immune system itself is protected by its own barrier. In the mucosal immune system, this barrier is appropriately called the Mucosal Barrier. The Mucosal barrier is made up of mucous. A thick layer of mucous can prevent external infections from entering the body and infecting it.

Typically, when a suspected infection attempts to enter the Mucosal system, specific antibody production occurs. They’re on their mark, and ready for attack mode. As the infection fights back and if it penetrates the barrier, another backup immune system becomes involved, the humoral system.

As the infection continues to affect the mucosal barrier, antigens make their way into the body’s general circulation and inflammation and allergy can occur. Additionally if any of three particular antibodies are increased (IgA, IgM, or IgC), when a BHD test is ran, this can indicate an overload of yeast, dietary proteins, and aerobic bacteria. In most cases, this is a sure sign of a leaky gut syndrome.

If there is no intervention at this point and the bodies’ levels of antibodies aren’t adjusted, the mucosal immune system can actually begin to weaken, and eventually shut down. The mucosal immune system’s backup is the humoral immune system.

Imagine, if you will, a scenario where there is a boss and a secretary. The boss’ (the mucosal immune system) is built to handle tough situations (infections) and ward off trouble. Sometimes, there will be situations in which the secretary (humoral immune system) needs to hop in and help a bit. This is fine. In moderation. If the boss completely stops working, all of the work ends up on the secretary’s lap. This is a sure fire way to cause overload and burnout. Just as a secretary can burnout from too much work that isn’t being taken care of by the front end, so can the humoral immune system from a non-functioning mucosal immune system.

Mucosal Immune System and Vaccines

The mucosal immune system is also being researched due to its significant role in the human immune system. Because of its major function and “front-line status”, researchers are taking a close look at it’s role in vaccines, particularly AIDS and allergies.

The reason for this intense research, according to Nature.com, is that “using a mucosal route of vaccination is that most infections affect or start from a mucosal surface, and that in these infections, topical application of a vaccine is often required to induce a protective immune response.”

In simpler terms: many infections such as AIDS, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal infections begin in the mecosal region of the immune system, so a direct immunization to that specific area seems completely necessary to prevent the replication of these viruses.

Okay, so it’s a good idea, and seems like it should work, why aren’t there a variety of mucosal immunizations available?

As essential as these vaccines seem, and quite frankly are, it has proven difficult to stimulate positive responses from the mucosal immune system. According to Nature.com, as of 2005, only half dozen of the approved vaccines for humans are administered mucosally.

Autism Symptoms VS Autism Treatment

As research advances further, it’s pretty hard to deny the fact that Autism has a biological connection. The mutual symptoms that many Autistic children share are a bit more than coincidence. From the intestinal inflammation to the excess of toxic metals loose in the body, it’s all but point-blank documented that Autism is absolutely biological.

The areas that differ, however are the treatment approaches that are taken to treat Autism. Some doctors treat Autism as a whole by providing medication to their patients. Other doctor’s, especially those in the Biomedical Field of study treat the symptoms of Autism individually. After all, acting out and being socially underdeveloped is a completely different symptom than being unable to digest milk.

It’s important that when your child is diagnosed with Autism that you do not take it as a forever-sentence of turmoil and pain. There are a great deal of success stories surrounding many treatment options. Below are some of the treatment options that are currently being utilized for Autism treatment:

HBOT or Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment is the process of delivering 100% pure oxygen to the body at a greater pressure than it exists already int he atmosphere. Treatment: Diet Modification

Many parents report digestion and diet issues with with their Autistic children. The most commonly reported sensitivities are to wheat and dairy – also known as Gluten and Casein. More than the negative digestive traits that it causes, Gluten attaches itself to the same neurotransmitters that morphine and like drugs attach themselves too. Some parents report that it’s almost as if their children are addicted to Gluten when they try to take them off of it. In a sense, they are. If you choose to make the decision to take your child off of Gluten and Casein, be sure to keep an eye out for the hidden sources of Gluten. There are several other diet modification plans that parents seek including SCD – or Specific Carbohydrate Diet – which focuses on removing sugars from the diet. This promotes eliminating intestinal bacterial and yeast overgrowth in the body. Another option is the Feingold Diet, which promotes avoiding foods that can rid the body of essential vitmains. For example, if you consume foods that have Yellow #5, you lose Zinc and Iron through your urine.

Symptom: Socially Unacceptable Behavior
Treatment: Behavior Modification

One of the most recognized symptoms of Autism is the behavior issues. Children often act out and have episodes of complete meltdown. There are many approaches to Behavior Modification, but the basis is reforming learning behavior. Some practitioners utilize the reward system – that is, rewarding the child when they preform the desired behavior. Others practice repetitive motions, meaning that they practice the behavior over and over with the child until it becomes a “learned” behavior.

These are just a few of the symptoms and a few of the treatments available. The point here is that Autism isn’t something to treat – it’s moreso the symptoms of Autism that are treatable. As with any large problem, it’s much easier to break it down into steps. Each accomplished step is a step closer to the cure.

Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy – What You Need and Should Know

 

If someone would have recommended you to try HBOT 10 years ago, chances are that you would have thought it was some new-age robot that helped you with

something like housework. How helpful it would be to have a machine that would do the impossible. Today, though it’s not as universally known, more and more people realize that HBOT isn’t a robot – it’s a highly successful treatment of many brain traumas.

The Basics – What is HBOT?

HBOT is an acronym for Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy. “Hyper” means ‘increased’, and “Baric” relates to pressure. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the intermittent treatment of the body with 100 precent oxygen at pressures greater than the atmosphere.

When 100% oxygen is delivered to the body at an increased pressure, much of the oxygen is absorbed by the blood stream and carried to necessary organs and tissues. This delivery of pure oxygen helps antibiotics and other medications work better, and activates white blood cells in order to ward off infection.

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy help Autism?

Oxygen Free Radicals are a developing brain’s worst enemy as they attack and destroy developing brain cells.  There are naturally ocurring antioxidants in the body whose job in the body is to attach these Oxygen Free Radicals and balance them out. Studies have found that the levels of this antioxidant are very low in a large amount of autistic children.

Delivering 100-precent oxygen to the Autistic body as is done in HBOT,  stimulates an increase of SOD (superoxide dismutase), one of the body’s most important antioxidant. SOD seeks out Free Radicals in the body and works to balance them out.

What Can I Expect With HBOT?

There are many pictures of Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers available on the internet. They can be a bit overwhelming and downright scary for a parent considering the treatment for their child.  The process itself is simple, and the patient is made to be as comfortable as possible. Many children enjoy the time in the space-ship like chamber.

An HBOT treatment is usually an hour long. The patient is placed on a cot-like bed and rolled into the chamber. For the hour, 100% Oxygen is released into the chamber, and the patient breathes it in. The pressure is increased slowly throughout the treatment and at the end, the patient is slowly decompressed and then exits the chamber.

During the treatment, the patient is free to watch TV, listen to music, talk with friends/family in the room, nap, read, or generally anything. The chamber has 360 degree vision as to avoid any claustrophobia or crypt-like feelings.

Does HBOT Really Work?

As with every treatment for every disease and disorder, there are those for the treatment and against the treatment. Worldwide, many conditions are being treated using Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment and there are many success stories.  Some of the other conditions that are being treated using HBOT include: sickle cell anemia, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, and Multiple Sclerosis. Though, there are over 100 conditions in which the HBOT chamber is being used to treat.

The question was: “Does HBOT Really Work?” – and we don’t have an answer for each person individually. We’d love nothing more than to declare, “YES! It works for us and it will work for your child!” But, we can’t. The effectiveness of any treatment is going to solely depend on your child’s specific condition and body chemistry. There have been success stories; children who show less destructiveness and aggression; but it’s not for everyone.  Scientifically, however, the treatment just makes sense. A primary cause of brain cell destruction is the abundance of Free Radicals. Delivering 100 percent oxygen to the blood stream enables the production of an antioxidant proven to seek out these Free Radicals. It just makes sense!

New Research Shows HBOT Success

Although we know, from anecdotal evidence and previous uncontrolled testing, that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can successfully treat autism, there has been no controlled test to back up these claims…until now!

Finally, a controlled clinical trial has proved that HBOT leads to improvements in autism spectrum disorders – hurray!

“Hyperbaric treatment for children with autism: a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial” a clinical trial carried out by Daniel A. Rossignol, Lanier W. Rossignol, Scott Smith, Cindy Schneider, Sally Logerquist, Anju Usman, Jim Neubrander, Eric M. Madren, Gregg Hintz, Barry Grushkin and Elizabeth A. Mumper, is the controlled trial that has got the autism world talking.

Rossignol, and his team from 6 different centers in the US, looked at a total of 62 children aged between 2 and 7 years, who were randomly split into two groups.

One group (the “treatment group”) underwent a program of 40 hours of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (1.3 atmosphere and 24% oxygen) and the second group (the “control group”) a program of 40 hours in a slightly pressurized room (1.03 atmosphere and 21% oxygen).

All of the children were assessed using various measures, including the Clinical Global Impression (CGI), the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC).

The Results

At the end of the program of treatment, children in the treatment group, who had received HBOT, showed significantly improved CGI, ABC and ATEC scores, when compared to the control group.
