Autism Treatment – Conventional VS Alternative Part II

Last week, we took a look at the two main approaches to treating Autism. The conventional means of treatment often has to deal with treating the symptoms of Autism with medication. Ridding your child of the often damaging and life-altering symptoms seems like it would be a good idea, but when you think about it, what are you treating? Do you have any chance of helping the problem itself get better if you’re just focusing on the side effects?

Imagine a smoker who has had the habit for 15 years and has developed a terrible cough. He decides he is going to take a cough suppression to help aid in the cough. But really, the problem lies in what the smoking and inhaling the troublesome substance us doing to the body. Without treating the issue itself, the coughing symptom may never go away.

Same goes for Autism and its symptoms. If we’re merely treating the common symptoms/side-effects (digestion issues, attention deficits, mood changes, allergies),  is there any chance that the symptoms will ever go away? Or will they merely be controlled?

Alternative treatments, as we mentioned, involve a few key focuses:

1) Always Involve Parents:

By involving the parents, this ensures not only that treatment plans can be practiced at home on a consistent basis, but that they have a better understanding of why the treatment is taking place. As parents, chances are, you’ve felt in the dark at times during your child’s treatment. You put your trust in the doctor or specialist that you’re seeing, but you’re never quite sure why the treatment is happening. If you know why you’re doing the things that you’re doing, there is a better chance of you remaining consistent in doing so. Knowing how the treatment can help, will also enable you to realize you’re working toward a goal.

2) Nourish the Brain for optimal functions: Essential fatty acids, neurotransmitter support, decrease neuroinflammation, and diet to support the brain.

The brain is the source of all things related to the body. If one of the body’s functions are off, the answer to getting it back on track often lies in the brain. For example, when we take a pain reliever, it goes to work in the brain – to tell the brain to stop sending pain messages to whatever part of the body is ailing us.  In order to function correctly, the brain needs the right fuel, and this comes from vitamins, minerals, and other essential substances.

Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 6 and Omega 3) are key to brain function  and the body does not produce these compounds naturally. In instances where the levels of Omega 6 are greatly higher than Omega 3 in one’s diet, there can be negative effects on mood, cognition, and behavior. All of which are some of the major concerns in children with Autism.

These symptoms are often treated with anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications. However, if the true source of the problem (essential fatty acids) isn’t treated, then can the problem even be solved, or is it just being covered up like a paper towel over spilled milk?

Having a diet that eliminates Gluten (wheat) and Casein (diet) has also shown positive effects in behavioral symptoms as well as digestion problems. We’ve talked about this before, feel free to read more about the GFCF diet right here!

3) Activate the brain with activities, stimulation for growth and development.

Maintaining growth and development in the brain ensures that the brain doesn’t get “stuck”. When you begin a new routine, it’s important that you create a consistent practice of it so that it becomes a habit. Keeping the brain stimulated and introducing new activities makes sure your child gets used to using the therapies and activities that are introduced. A child is more likely to see benefits from treatment if they’re done on a consistent basis.  You cannot expect results overnight, but you can expect a steady developmental improvement if you keep on with the suggested activities from a professional.

Autism is a very difficult disorder for children and their parents to deal with. Since each and every case is different, we can’t possibly tell you which treatment method will work for you, or what medication to take. As far as we know, there is no “magic pill.” However, if you think about it, taking the symptoms that your child has and finding out what the root cause of them is could mean the different between covering up the problem and hoping that the problem magically disappears, or treating the core problem and tackling it head on. Some medications are a short term fix to a problem that needs much more attention.

How Can Chiropractic Medicine Help To Prevent And Treat Autism

Chiropractic treatments are often used to treat, and in some cases, to help cure, a variety of conditions. Many tend to think of them as only for a bad back, or a sore arm, but as a number of those who have autism are discovering, chiropractic care can help to treat the symptoms. In some cases, regular treatments may also help to prevent autism from occurring, which is particularly important for parents to consider.

During a chiropractic treatment, the chiropractor may employ one of several types of treatments in order to ‘adjust’ the spine of the patient. The first, and most popular, is a hands on approach, meaning that they will gently touch the patient to manually manipulate the spine or other areas of the body, such as the wrists or knees. There is evidence that treatments such as this can help to stimulate entire body, which often leads to increase motor skills and encourage a greater range of motion. Many report being able to function better, not only in day to day manual tasks, but also have an increased ability with some social interactions.

The results typically depend on the severity of the condition, as well as the length of the treatment. Some may begin to notice a difference with their very first chiropractic treatment, while others may need several in order to see or feel a difference. Repeat treatments often have a cumulative effect for a number of patients, and can often be a vital tool in treating all levels of autism at any age.

How To: Detox Environmental Toxicities

Body detoxification is the new big thing in healthy living. It’s very common in weight loss and healthy living scenarios to detoxify the body of harmful toxins that affect the immune and other important systems from functioning properly.

In order to keep the body free and clear from toxins, there are some dietary things that we can do, as well as avoiding smog, nicotine and other harmful substances. However, the environment itself carries it’s own amount of toxins and these are hard to avoid unless you live in a bubble. Yet, these toxins are bad for the body and the longer they are allowed to exist, they are given the chance to do damage.

Before we can correct the damage that may have already been done, we have to rid the body of the current toxins as not to produce more issues.

So, how do you detoxify the body from environmentally originated toxins?

1) Avoidance of Exposure

It’s important that you be sure that your child (and yourself!) are consistently exposed to clean air, food and water. Avoid smoking areas and being in a city with a lot of vehicle smog for long periods of time. Be sure you’re allowing your child to consume clean food that isn’t at risk for toxins or pesticides. Additionally, a diet free of gluten and casein has become popular and effective in avoiding allergic reactions. Avoid tap water when possible – or have a water filter in place. You’ll taste the difference most immediately when switching from tap to filtered water.

2) Supplementation

It is common in Autistic Children to find that their body is lacking the adequate vitamins and minerals to have an effective immune system. When the immune system isn’t working, it can’t fight off infection (which explains why you may notice your child might be very sick very often).

Once you find out what your child’s body is lacking, you can supplement it by modifying his/her diet and administering supplements in the form of multivitamins.

Dr. Walter Crinnion, a Naturopathic Doctor, has done increased studies on vitamins and minerals and wrote an article in response to a claim that vitamins were more dangerous than drugs. As Dr. Crinnion explains, it’s true that too much of some minerals is bad, as copper in excess can cause toxic damage, there is no backup that says multi-vitamins are useless.

3) Cleansing

Dr. Crinnion has also done a great deal of work in detoxification by ridding the body of toxic load. He studies the foods that could be making you sick. He interestingly points out that the foods that your child craves the most could be the ones that are causing the most damage. We’ve talked here before about the body being “addicted” to gluten as it attaches to the brain similar to morphine.

Cleansing the body of these things is essential to get on the right path to wellness.

There are a few methods that can be utilized to cleanse the body of toxins: Of the most popular and effective are:

Chelation –  Chelation is the process utilized to remove damaging heavy metals from the body. Mercury, iron, and other metals are often found in the Autistic body and can have negative effects on the brain making Autism symptoms even worse. Another source of damaging metals is Thiomersal, which is found in many childhood vaccines. Chelation Therapy includes the administering of chelating agents to remove heavy metals.

Juicing – By utilizing fruits and vegetables that are highly concentrated, the body flushes out unnecessary toxins. The body digests juices very quickly (in about 25 minutes), so it’s nutrients get in and get to work very quickly. Organic fruits and vegetables are best for juice detoxification and can easily be done at home. Enzymes, vitamins and minerals will be given to your body while toxins will be evicted!

The first step is realizing what is affecting the body negatively. The 2nd, avoiding the things that are making the body sick. And the 3rd, ridding the body of existing toxins. Getting the body in good working order is the key to treating Autism instead of fueling it.

The Brain-Gut Connection

Our miraculous body has some amazing connections. Think about it, when you stub your toe, your brain sends a message down to your toe that it hurts. When you have a toothache, sometimes the pain can be felt in another tooth because of how many nerves there are. One of the most fascinating connections, however is that of the brain and gut.

Some often call the gut a second brain, as it sends a number of messages throughout the body, just as the brain does. Remember the last time you had butterflies? Some may argue that this is your brain sending a nervous signal to your stomach. How about when you eat a lot of food in one sitting – it takes your stomach a little bit of time to tell your brain that you are in fact full. (This is why many doctors and health counselors suggest eating more slowly to give the stomach time to communicate with the brain. Before even eating, the brain can get the stomach’s juices flowing in anticipation.

In Autism cases,  and as a reverse to this brain-gut connection, a troubled intestine can also send messages to the brain. Because the gastrointestinal system is so closely related to the brain, they should be considered one.

A sick or disrupted gastrointestinal system can cause behavioral symptoms as well. Just as being hungry causes anyone to be a little grumpy, this is the same in many other instances. Because GI problems are common in Autism cases, one might be inclined to ask, “Could it be a gut issue that is causing my child’s behavioral issues?”

From being anti-social and extra anxious to overly sensitive and lacking focus, the malfunctioning stomach can be the cause of many neuro-symptoms.  Other symptoms that can be attributed to poor gut function are depression, lack of interest, short temper, loss of memory, trouble recalling things, headaches, and sleep problems.

It could be a diet change, or an allergic reaction, or gut flora that could be affecting your child. While every case of Autism is different, it’s very interesting to consider the connection between the brain and the gut and how seemingly brain-related symptoms could originate in the stomach and vice-versa.

3 Signs That Your Child May Have Neurological Disturbances

We have something special for you today. Dr. Chun Wong has released a special offer on a Hair Test Analysis Kit that can help identify toxic metals in the body as well as mineral deficiencies. If you’d like to order the test, or simply read a little bit more about it, you can do so by clicking here.

neurological disorders and autismIt’s sometimes hard for a parent to be willing to concede to the idea that their child may have a neurological disorder. When the child is misbehaving, it’s much easier for them to blame it on the sugar intake, their friends, or even themselves before they even want to begin to entertain the idea that there may be something wrong chemically. Just because your child has a neurological disorder, does not mean that they are crazy. Just as a diabetic has an insulin deficiency, Autism or other neurological disordered children often have a chemical imbalance.

But how do you know if the child is just having bad behavior? Could it really be just their friends or sugar intake that is affecting it? Or, is it something more? Here are some sure fire signs to look for.

1. Fatigue

After a long day of play, we expect (and hope!) our kids are tired enough to crash for the night. However, what do you do if your child is always tired all of the time? This could be due to a number of factors including poor circulation, low O2 levels, or even anemia, the absence of enough healthy red blood cells. Also, fatigue can be a result of poor functioning digestive system as well as anxiety.

2. Depression / Anxiety

Children get depression and anxiety just as adults do. It’s also been recently found that depression and anxiety, affect the same areas of the brain and physical pain. So, when you’re so depressed, “it hurts”? You’re actually not crazy. In children, sometimes it’s hard to detect depression. As a parent, you’d like to think that you “know”.  But sometimes children don’t know how to react to these feelings of anxiety. Depending on the child, they may not express these feelings. Or, they may over express them. Depression and Anxiety is chemically due to the imbalance of neurotransmitters, or chemicals that carry messages to the brain. If there’s not enough “happy stuff” flowing in the brain, then you or your child is going to feel sad, depressed, or anxious. Depression and Anxiety can both be caused by poor gut function or fatigue, which are contributing factors to mental health.

3. Poor Gut Function

When we consume food, the goal is to feed our bodies with the stuff that it needs to be healthy. If we have a diet rich in sugars, then these car corrode arteries, and cause a lot of health problems. However, even when we do eat good foods, if our bodies aren’t digesting them properly, then we aren’t getting the nutrients that we need anyway. You can consume all of the Vitamin C and Fiber in the world, but if your digestive system isn’t working and pulling the fiber and vitamins from your foods to deliver to your body, then you’re not getting the nutrients that you need. It’s essential that the gut is working properly, is not overly acidic, and is delivering nutrients in order to have a functioning body overall. Poor gut function can be caused by anxiety and fatigue.

What you might have noticed is that each of these symptoms can be caused by each other. For example, fatigue can be a sub-symptom of depression. Depression and Anxiety can be a sub-symptom of fatigue. Poor gut function can be caused by fatigue or depression. And depression can be a cause of fatigue or poor digestive system function. It seems like a vicious cycle, and it can be. The key is to find the source of the problem so that it can be treated.

A Hair Analysis Test can be a good place to start as it can detect toxic levels of metals or other damaging materials in the body. It is often chemical deficiencies and the existence of toxic chemicals that cause the body to not work properly. It can also be a key to vitamin and mineral deficiency. So, if you’re wondering where to start, how about at the beginning?

Detoxification and Detox Methods

As you may recall, last week we took a look at some tests that can be utilized to detect the level of toxicity of the body. You can catch up by reading last week’s post here.

This week, now that we know how to detect if the body has toxic levels of metals or other materials, we’re going to take a look at detoxification options. Once we know the body is toxic, our first inclination is to repair it. Before we do this, however, we have to rid the body of all of its toxins so that they can stop causing damage.

Where Toxicity Originates

The commonality of toxic bodies in Autistic children, and really the universal population is no real big surprise considering the world we live in. Each day we are breathing in everything from pollen, to car fumes, to toxic waste. The foods that we eat are treated with pesticides. The milk that we drink is from animals that are given different medications, antibiotics, and even steroids. When we walk outside, we ingest cigarette fumes from other smokers.

Luckily we do have a detoxification system in our bodies that’s sole purpose is to filter out these toxins and release them from the body. If the detoxification and immune systems are not functioning properly however, then our bodies absorb the toxins instead of releasing them.

Parents have always known that there is a connection between Autism and the digestive system. Doctors haven’t always been on board, but thanks to intensive studies by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, we are now able to put a name to the digestive issues that plague a great number of Autistic Children. Autistic Enterocolitis, describes the inflammation in the gut that also often contains blisters and abscesses filled with pus and infection. In the gut, undigested foods are stuck to the walls, left to decompose and literally “go bad” inside of the body. These conditions promote a breeding ground for parasites, worms, fungus, and other infections inside of the body.

As we said, the first and very most important thing that must be done in order to repair the body is to remove the toxic materials from the body. Before the actual repair can take place, the body must start off as a clean slate.

One of the most commonly heard of detoxification methods is Chelation. Chelation is the administering of a series of drugs that break down the toxins and aid the body in releasing them. Some of the most common toxins that are targeted by Chelation are lead, mercury and arsenic. The chelation was first introduced after World War I when many people were exposed to toxic substances.

Though many people have had wonderful results from using chelation, one concern is that the chelation drugs also attack and destroy necessary nutrients, like zinc. Doctor’s who administer chelating agents will adjust the diet of your child to ensure that the proper nutrients are being absorbed.

Another method of detoxification is ingesting highly concentrated amounts of raw fruits and vegetables. Because juices are digested in about 20-25 minutes, the digestive system has very little to do with processing the juice. It’s important to note that we’re not talking about the juices found in stores. Even the most seemingly healthy juices are treated with sugars or other nonproductive ingredients that negate the detoxification processes. Juices are most beneficial when made from the right fruits and vegetables at home.

The most important thing to remember here is the order in which detoxification should be done. First, determine that the body really is toxic. Then, detoxify the body. Repair the body. Replace nutrients. It’s important that this order be taken as any other way would not be as effective. You must rid the body of toxins, start with a clean slate, and then proceed with repairing procedures or practices.

A Body With Bacteria Is A Healthy Body

I was sitting in the waiting room of my office today, and picked up the issue of Psychology Today that was sitting in the magazine bin. I thumbed through and saw an interesting article on Probiotics. I instantly thought of all of our wonderful readers here at New Autism Cure, and how I wanted to fill you in on some interesting facts about Probiotics. Last week, I put it off to tell you about the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen, hopefully you found that to be helpful. I myself have been working on keeping the food I take in amongst the clean veggies.

Now, onto Probiotics.

What are Probiotics?

To summarize, Probiotics are live bacteria that have been found to be beneficial to the body. Probiotics are often found in food with added active cultures such as yogurt and dietary yogurts. It was first found that Probiotics helped the body by balancing the intestinal microbial balance. As time has gone on, studies are being conducted and documented that show that Probiotics help with intestinal inflammation as well as diarrhea caused by pathogens.

The benefits of Probiotics were first introduced by Metchnikoff in the 1900’s.  (Read about Metchinkoff’s research here.) He believed it to be possible to take damaging bacteria and replace it with good bacteria. Metchnikoff believed that not all bacteria is bad. Even in modern times, we hear the word bacteria, and we instantly think negatively.  But there are some good bacteria that can target bad bacteria.

In adequate doses, probiotics or “good bacteria” can be beneficial to the body. This is particularly true of Lactic Acid Bacteria or lactobacillus, which has the ability to provide digestive enzymes to the body that assist in the breakdown of food. And as we have discussed before, many Autistic children have inflammation of the gut and difficulties with digestion. Additionally, Lactic Acid Bacteria helps balance the pH in the colon.

A Great Study Goes Bad

Recently, a study was conducted to establish the benefits of good bacteria on Autism. There were 2 groups of children, one group was given probiotics, and the other, the placebo. Conducted by Professor Glen Gibson at Reading University in the United Kingdom, the study was supposed to be conducted to where for a determined amount of time both group would take the probiotics, and then switch one of the other group to a placebo midway through the study.

The group of children who were taking the Probiotics had such amazing benefits, that the families knew that they were the group who had the real thing. When it came time to switch out, the families resisted. The parents thought it would be unfair for the Autistic children who had experienced such great benefits to go back to their former selves. There was a very high drop out rate, and therefore the study technically failed. But it definitely left researchers wondering what the true benefits really are. The study is sure to be replicated and attempted again in the near future.  We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for that.

The Why, What, and How of Leaky Gut Syndrome

In posts past, we’ve mentioned Leaky Gut syndrome. Just last week we spoke about the importance of keeping the mucosal immune system healthy and the effects of when it’s not.  When infections break through the musocal barrier, allergies and inflammation can occur. Furthermore, if levels of certain antibodies are increased when a test is ran, this is an indication of an an excess of yeast in the body, and also symptoms of leaky gut syndrom.

But what is Leaky Gut syndrome? What causes the gut to leak? Can it be fixed? Why are children with Autusm more at risk for this condition?

That’s a lot of questions, and we only have one blog post to answer them in. Let’s get started.

What is leaky gut syndrome?

First thing’s first: Leaky gut syndrome is a condition that is said to affect millions of people world wide. Again, I’ll reference last week’s post about Mucosal Immunity. Remember when we mentioned that the immune system has a mucous like protective coating to keep microorganisms out. If the mocosal barrier weakens, toxins and other microorganisms are leaked into the blood stream from the stomach area. Hence, Leaky Gut.

How does the gut leak? How does that happen?

In order to understand how the gut can leak, it’s important to understand how the body digests, at least when it is doing so correctly.

70% of the body’s immune system is located in the digestive system. [1] In this system, the small intestine works as a filter, only allowing the breakdown of products to enter into the bloodstream. In an ideal situation, only nutrients are allowed to pass through, and toxins are held in the small intestine away from the blood.

In the intestine, villi and microvilly (small, hair-like extensions of the intestine), carry nutrients, amino acids, and electrolytes into cells.

Leaky gut syndrome, causes the intestinal lining and villi to become damaged and unable to develop the enzymes that are necessary for the absorption of nutrients. More simply said, even though you may be feeding your child healthy foods that are packed with vitamins and nutrients, they’re useless if the body isn’t absorbing them.

Sometimes, toxins can leak from the intestine. In most cases, humans will have a strong enough immune system to control the leakage. Over time, however, the leakage will erode the stomach lining and weaken the immune system, thereby giving the body a zero defense against toxins.

As the intestinal lining becomes weaker and weaker, larger molecules of toxins can enter the immune system. Because of this, toxins are produced that cause allergies and inflammation.

Leaky Gut Syndrome’s Effect On The Liver

The liver is the largest gland in the body and takes on a lot of roles and has a lot of functions in the body including producing bile, storing bile that is essential for digestion, filtering out drugs, alcohol, and other toxins, storing glucose, and removing damaged blood cells.

Leaky Gut Syndrome really kicks the liver into an unhealthy overdrive as it subjects it to harmful toxins. When the liver cannot deal with the toxins that it is being given, it releases them back out into the bloodstream.

Can leaky gut syndrome be fixed? What are the treatments?

As for the leaky gut itself, there are a large amount of treatments, and depending on the doctor you consult, your answer may be different. We aren’t hear to attack other doctors, but just as a warning: some doctors do not believe that leaky gut syndrome even exists, while others believe in a series of medications are the trick. Be sure to investigate all possible avenues before choosing a method of treatment.

Some more examples of treatment are: increased activity (sweating rids the body of toxins), a detoxification diet, a parasites cleanse, dental cleanup (if your teeth are infected, you are constantly ingesting that infection into your body), and many others.

There are many treatments available for Leaky Gut syndrome. People that are experiencing leaky gut syndrome are severely lacking in amino acids and other nutrients because again, the body isn’t capable of absorbing them.  The lacking nutrients can absolutely be attempted to be replenished using methods like Amino Acid Therapy.

The Importance of Mucosal Immunity: More Than Just Protection From Infection

Mucosal Immune System

When it comes to Autism, there are a lot of big words floating around. From Mercury to Mucosal Immunity and Hemoglobin levels to Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments (HBOT), things can get pretty overwhelming. We’ve covered the dangers of Mercury, and the vast improvements and advancements that the HBOT treatment has received. We haven’t yet discussed Mucosal Immunity and its importance, and in it’s own right, it serves a huge role in the prevention of infection.

Mucosal Immune System: The Need To Know Basics:

The Mucosal Immune System, much like it sounds (notice the closeness to “Mucous”), is one of the parts of the overall human immune system. The responsibility of the Mucosal Immune System, is to prevent  various infectious microbes from entering the mucous membranes. It basically protects the mucous membrane from infection. Additionally, it protects the body or balances it when microorganisms and other foreign materials enter the body.

Since a healthy mucosal immune system aids in the prevention of infection, it’s relatively obvious the reasons for its necessity, especially in the Autistic body that is typically more susceptible to infection.

How The Mucosal Immune System Works: In Easy-To-Understand Terms:

The beginning of the healthy, infection-free body starts in the immune system. The immune system itself is protected by its own barrier. In the mucosal immune system, this barrier is appropriately called the Mucosal Barrier. The Mucosal barrier is made up of mucous. A thick layer of mucous can prevent external infections from entering the body and infecting it.

Typically, when a suspected infection attempts to enter the Mucosal system, specific antibody production occurs. They’re on their mark, and ready for attack mode. As the infection fights back and if it penetrates the barrier, another backup immune system becomes involved, the humoral system.

As the infection continues to affect the mucosal barrier, antigens make their way into the body’s general circulation and inflammation and allergy can occur. Additionally if any of three particular antibodies are increased (IgA, IgM, or IgC), when a BHD test is ran, this can indicate an overload of yeast, dietary proteins, and aerobic bacteria. In most cases, this is a sure sign of a leaky gut syndrome.

If there is no intervention at this point and the bodies’ levels of antibodies aren’t adjusted, the mucosal immune system can actually begin to weaken, and eventually shut down. The mucosal immune system’s backup is the humoral immune system.

Imagine, if you will, a scenario where there is a boss and a secretary. The boss’ (the mucosal immune system) is built to handle tough situations (infections) and ward off trouble. Sometimes, there will be situations in which the secretary (humoral immune system) needs to hop in and help a bit. This is fine. In moderation. If the boss completely stops working, all of the work ends up on the secretary’s lap. This is a sure fire way to cause overload and burnout. Just as a secretary can burnout from too much work that isn’t being taken care of by the front end, so can the humoral immune system from a non-functioning mucosal immune system.

Mucosal Immune System and Vaccines

The mucosal immune system is also being researched due to its significant role in the human immune system. Because of its major function and “front-line status”, researchers are taking a close look at it’s role in vaccines, particularly AIDS and allergies.

The reason for this intense research, according to, is that “using a mucosal route of vaccination is that most infections affect or start from a mucosal surface, and that in these infections, topical application of a vaccine is often required to induce a protective immune response.”

In simpler terms: many infections such as AIDS, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal infections begin in the mecosal region of the immune system, so a direct immunization to that specific area seems completely necessary to prevent the replication of these viruses.

Okay, so it’s a good idea, and seems like it should work, why aren’t there a variety of mucosal immunizations available?

As essential as these vaccines seem, and quite frankly are, it has proven difficult to stimulate positive responses from the mucosal immune system. According to, as of 2005, only half dozen of the approved vaccines for humans are administered mucosally.

Organic Acid Test: The All-In-One Test For Autism

A very common treatment for Autism is diet modification and mineral supplement. However, before such changes are made, it must be determined what state the body is actually in. While many tests can detect different bodily conditions, the Organic Acid Test (OAT) is becoming increasingly more common. Why choose to get the Organic Acid Test when testing for Autistic Body conditions?

The Organic Acid Test analyzes wastes and discharges that the body releases through the urine. The newest form of the Organic Acid Test can detect up to 70 compounds. The test can detect many known toxic compounds that can wreak havoc on the body. These toxic materials can often not be detected with one simple test; it takes a numerous amount of tests to do so, if they are able to be detected at all.

The main factor that the new and improved Organic Acid Test can detect is the existence of intestinal yeast and bacterial growth. Having an overgrowth of yeast in the intestines is very common in people with Autism. It is characterized by chronic fatigue, low immunity, and poor digestion. A number of gastro-intestinal problems arise from having an over growth of yeast. One of the most common types of yeast that is overlooked in some tests is Clostridia, and the Organic Acid Test accurately detects this.

Detecting the presence of an abundance of intestinal yeast with an Organic Acid Test can put you on the right track to obtaining yeast treatments for this overgrowth if it exists.  The detection of yeast is essential in treating not only gastrointestinal issues, but also neurological and behavioral issues.

Some of the newest compounds or “markers” that can be detected via the Organic Acid Test are:

Inorganic Phosphate which is the indicator for Vitamin D Deficiency and Bone Function

Quinolinic Acid which is the indicator for inflammation and neurotoxicity.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) – which is a chelating agent as well as an indicator for glutathione precursor. NAC is an antioxidant protects the body from the toxicity of acetaminophen as well as against heavy metals such as mercury. A low level of NAC can indicate a deficiency in glutathione.

Along with the new compounds that are able to be detected, the Organic Acid Test is able to detect a number of compounds such as Fatty Acids, Vitamin Indicators, Amino Acids, and Toxic Indicators. All of which are very prominent and levels are typically abnormal in Autism cases.

In many Autism cases, the problem lies in finding where the deficiency or body issue is. Many parents go through many tests, all of which come back “normal” only to still experience the same damaging symptoms in their children. The Organic Acid test enables many compounds to be tested and for overgrowth or deficiencies to be detected, and then treated.

A complete list of all important markers or indicators can be found here.
